What is the difference between biodegradable and compostable? . Be cautious with greenwashing and marketing terms! . While all compostable items are biodegradable, not all biodegradable items are compostable. . Biodegradable simply means that an item will break down in nature eventually. . However, this term is misleading because a biodegradable item could break down in 6 months or in hundred years. . Compostable items must break down in a single composting cycle. . The outcome of the compost must be non-toxic and safe for the environment. . However, remember that not all compostable items are safe for home composting, and need to be composted in industrial facilities. . Why is it important to compost? . When organic waste is sent to landfill, it will decompose without oxygen, which will produce methane, a greenhouse gas much more harmful to the planet than CO2. . In a compost pile, organic waste will decompose into CO2 because it is exposed to oxygen. At the end of the cycle, you will get a free fertilizer for your garden and plant pots to keep them looking beautiful! . Think about all the organic waste from your kitchen that you could compost! .
